When moving to a new country, there are lots of things you need to think about. Packing up all of your belongings so that you can start a new life somewhere exciting may seem a little daunting at first, but once you’re settled in it will quite often be the best thing you ever do. Relocating to Lanzarote is no different! Many tourists often dream of calling this island home one day for various reasons. If you’re looking for information regarding relocating to Lanzarote, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve outlined what you need to know before getting on the plane and jetting off for a life in the sun.

Sun, Sea & Sand

Because of its location, the ideal weather conditions in Lanzarote are what often draw people to the island. It’s located just off the west coast of Africa, which is what helps give it its warm year-round temperatures. During the summer, there are average highs of around 25°C while winter typically is 17°C. Many expats see these conditions as ideal as it’s not too hot but they’re still able to get away from the cold weather associated with the UK.

Working in Lanzarote

If you’re an EU citizen, the good news is that you have the right to seek work in Lanzarote. When moving here, you may be on the lookout for a job. In order to work here legally, you need to apply for a NIF (Numero de Identificacion Fiscal) number as this is used for tax purposes. A lot of the jobs here are related to tourism, so you may find a change in career happens when relocating to Lanzarote. Industry or admin related positions typically tend to be held by those who can speak fluent Spanish, so you may want to brush up on your linguistic skills if this is the area you want to work in. You’ll also want to be open-minded and proactive in your job search. There are no Job Centres and not all jobs are advertised online, so sometimes is best if you get out and speak to people about finding work.

Education in Lanzarote

You may be relocating to Lanzarote with young children who are still in education. There are three types of schools in Lanzarote: Local Spanish, Private English and Private International. Private options tend to be more expensive than local schools, but they can be worth the €5,000 per annum if your child is of a secondary school age, you only wish to live in Lanzarote for a couple of years or you want your children to be taught the UK curriculum and obtain GCSEs and A Levels.

Things to Do

When living in Lanzarote, there are many unmissable things to do and places to see. There is a vast range of fun and exciting activities, many of which are unique to the island. From the more popular tourist spots to some marvellous hidden gems, here are five things we think should be on your Lanzarote bucket list.

Timanfaya National Park

The dormant volcanoes at Timanfaya National Park haven’t erupted since 1824, so you don’t need to worry about handling any hot, bubbling lava. Eruptions that happened between 1730 and 1736 created the vast basalt landscape that now covers around a quarter of the whole island. Though you can’t walk around the national park, there is a bus tour that allows you to see the impressive craters. What’s more, there is a restaurant that uses the heat coming from the volcano to cook some of its food.

Museo Atlántico

Have you ever been to an underwater sculpture museum before? Well, located in the sea near Marina Rubicon, around 400 cement figures and sculptures created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor can be found. If you’re a fan of scuba diving, then this one is definitely for you!

Cueva de Los Verdes

Want to explore one of the largest volcanic tunnels in the world? Created around 3,000 years ago by lava flows erupted from the nearby volcano Monte Corona, Cueva de Los Verdes (The Green Caves) allows you to go inside a lava tube. The caves extend for 6 kilometres above sea level and for another 1.5 kilometres below the sea.

Haría

The historic town of Haria is one not to be missed! It boasts an extremely chilled out and relaxed atmosphere, meaning it’s an easy walk around. Nestled in the Valley of a Thousand Palms, it’s one of the island’s greenest villages. Thanks to this, you get to experience something truly different to the more built-up resorts located in the south.

El Golfo & Lago Verde

El Golfo is a half-submerged cone of a volcano which has slowly been eroded by waves from the sea. Located at the foot of the crater wall is Lago Verde. You may have seen the Green Lagoon or the Green Lake on a postcard before, but it really is a sight worth seeing in person! Every time you visit it’s likely to look different as the colour and time of day can affect its appearance.
